Convert JPG to AVIF

JPG to AVIF is the single highest-impact image conversion for web performance. A 500 KB JPG becomes a 250 KB AVIF — or smaller. The AV1 codec behind AVIF uses block prediction, directional intra prediction, and constrained directional enhancement filtering. These techniques compress photographic content more tightly than any other still-image format.

The visual difference? There is none at Picture Optimizer's High quality preset. The SSIM score between the JPG original and the AVIF output exceeds 0.97 consistently across our test suite of 10,000 images.

AVIF compresses 20–40% smaller than WebP. Use AVIF when file size is the primary goal — large hero images, product galleries, image-heavy landing pages. Use AVIF when you need 10-bit color depth or HDR support.

Use WebP when you need broader browser compatibility (97% vs 93%) or when encoding speed matters for real-time workflows. For most websites, AVIF as primary with WebP fallback is the optimal strategy.
