PNG to WebP: Transparency Without the File Size

PNG files with transparency are often the heaviest assets on a web page. A product image on a transparent background can weigh 1–3 MB as PNG-24. The same image as lossy WebP with alpha: 200–400 KB. The same as lossless WebP: 400–800 KB.

Lossy vs Lossless WebP for PNG Sources

PNG sources contain pixel-perfect data. Converting to lossy WebP introduces minimal compression artifacts in exchange for the smallest possible file. Converting to lossless WebP preserves every pixel exactly — files are larger than lossy but still 40–60% smaller than the PNG source.
